INTRODUCTION

Last Saturday I heard Paul Harvey state that there are 40 wars currently going on in the world, and that all 40 have religion as their cause. He went on to say that in spite of this, he wouldn’t want to imagine a world without religion. I would, and I do. And as John Lennon wrote, “… I’m not the only one."

Every day more and more people are abandoning religion and embracing spirituality. The reason for this is clear: religion simply doesn’t work, and spirituality works simply. Religion establishes differences and encourages separatism; spirituality recognizes that there are no differences, and that we are all the same. Religion is founded upon fear-based dogma and guilt-ridden tenets, and it demands that we accept
everything at face value. Spirituality is based on an inner awareness of our true identities and the actualized experience of love.

Throughout our recorded history religion has sanctioned violence and justified destruction, and it continues to do so even today. At the sametime, however, a shift in consciousness is beginning to stir the human spirit. More and more people are realizing that truth comes from within, not from without. This collective realization will one day effectively dismantle religion, and when it does, the “world will live as one."
