The Mummy of Marca Huasi

Day 1 July 9th
Lima/ San Pedro de Costa/ Marca Huasi

Today we leave Lima. Once we board our private bus we embark upon a journey into the most amazing place I have ever been - Marca Huasi (pronounced:Mark ah wah see). The journey to Marca Huasi is an adventure in itself. The bus ride takes about 4 hours.

During the last 2.5 hours we travel across the western slope of the Andes and have started to climb. The road is steep and unpaved. Your view is one of primitive grandeur - the valley floor is quickly replaced with towering mountains shrouded in clouds and mist. This part of the journey ends at the remote (10,000') village of San Pedro de Costa, just below the Marca Huasi Plateau - another 3,000 feet vertically and the last leg of the climb.

Once we arrive our supplies are loaded onto burros. We are issued horses and slowly continue on to the mysterious plateau. The horseback ride take us another 2 to 2.5 hours. We make our way along worn trails, through a cactus wall and over saddleback's of mountains. The view is beyond description.

3 Stories Tall
You know you have arrived when you see this edifice. It is the "Face of Ages".

Towering over 3 stories tall, it is both the face of an old man as well as a young man, depending on your perspective and the shadows during the day.

If this we not strange enough, the shadow cast during the equinox is one of a chimpanzee. The effect is both fascinating and eerie..

Day 2 July 10th
Marca Huasi
Today we hike the plateau.

Here you see the strangest things witnessed during our adventure. Huge stone animals, faces and heads populate this plateau. - no one knows when this was done or why. There is so much to see here that it would take months to see it all.

During the hike you can expect to see the Face of Ages Monument, the Elephants, the Alchemist, the Huacracocha Lake, the Fortress, the Mummy, the Condors, the Pilot, the Thueris God and the Aeronauts, the Amphitheater and the double Sphinx. Besides these, there are many other faces and shaped stones throughout the landscape.

Finally we arrive to the strangest spot of all - a place where strange things have happened to myself and several others who have been here. As we pass through "the gates of Lyra" we clearly see beneath us a large stone outcropping. Moving closer it becomes obvious this place is not normal looking, either. The walls surrounding us are seemingly melted and retreating. We have just entered the area the locals have named "The Star Gate" - another transdimentional doorway!

During the evening another Shamanic ceremony might be conducted (weather permitting - it gets very cold here at night). Nearby our camp is a mysterious place we believe to be a passage way between worlds! Interested?

Day 3 July 11th
Marca Huasi / San Pedro de Costa / Lima/ Home

By midday we leave Marca Huasi behind. After walking down the mountain we again arrive into the central plaza of San Pedro de Costa. The streets are busy with children, playing with spinning tops and balls. School and church bells ring in the afternoon as our bus arrives to deliver us safely back to civilization.

Returning to our hotel we clean up, begin repacking our luggage and reflect on our adventures, as this remarkable journey comes to a close. The faces seen, the new friends made - the adventure of a lifetime had.

We prepare for our return home, anxious to develop rolls of film and excited to tell our families & friends about our journey into that mythic place held up against a southern star filled sky... a magical place only found in Peru.

Incidentally, in case you are wondering, the drop-off is several thousand feet straight down...
